Muscolino and Somers Advance in ITA Central Region Championships

Salt Lake City, Utah - Tulsa's Daniela Muscolino and Ilona Somers advanced to the second round of singles competition, while two Tulsa tandems continued in doubles action today at the 2003 ITA Central Region Championships at the Eccles Tennis Center on The University of Utah campus.
Tulsa's ninth-seeded Muscolino overcame Oklahoma State's Katia Kolodynska, 7-5, 6-0 to advance to tomorrow's round of 32, while Somers defeated Utah's Sheri Esrock, 6-3, 6-0. They will face New Mexico State's Isabella Mignot and Air Force's ninth-seeded Laura Nigro, respectively.
TU's Donata Majauskaite, however, dropped her first-round match, 6-1, 7-5, to Boise State's Erin Polowski, and will participate in the consolation singles draw. She will take on New Mexico's Tjasa Suvak later tonight.
In the doubles competition, Muscolino and Somers, the tournament's seventh-seeded doubles tandem, received a bye for their first round of competition, while Tulsa's Kindsay Grimes and Lisette Pereira, earned an 8-1 victory over Utah State's Lindsey Bennion and Carolyn Stephens. Zoe Buhagiar and Majauskaite, and Timberly Greenly and Tiffany Smith, however, fell 9-8 and 8-4, respectively, in tough competition.
