Tulsa Defeats Roadrunners in Ewing-Grover Olds/GMC Truck Invite

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad took the first two games from the University of Texas-San Antonio, before having to hold off the Roadrunners in a 3-1 (30-25, 30-16, 30-26, 30-25) Golden Hurricane victory on Friday night in the final match of the first day for the Ewing-Grover Olds/GMC Invite presented by Adam's Mark Hotel.
Tulsa took an early lead in the first game, then held on for the five point win. Almost everything went TU's way in the second game as the Golden Hurricane outhit UTSA 16-8 in the second frame. In contrast, almost nothing went right for TU in the third stanza as UTSA built an 18-9 lead. Tulsa answered to get to with in one point at 26-27, however the Roadrunners closed out the game with a kill and a pair of TU miscues.
The fourth game was a back-and-fourth contest, as the game was tied on four seperate occassions. UTSA held leads of four points, twice, while Tulsa's first lead did not come until the 15-14 mark. Junior Lindsay Eaves helped TU mount the comeback with five kills and two service aces for the Hurricane.
Senior Nathalia Araujo led the Hurricane attack with 16 kills, while freshman Brie Penaluna and Eaves contributed 14 kills apeice. Junior Kristin Bailey also added double-figure kills with 11. Araujo posted a match-high in digs as well with 23, while sophomore Evyn Bandy added 17. Junior Vanessa Thon recorded her third double-double of the season with 53 assists and 11 digs.
Freshman Brittany Hildebrand led the Roadrunner attack with 14 kills, while fellow freshman DeeDee Strickland added 47. Freshman Meagan Daniel posted a team-high 18 digs, as well.
Earlier in the day, UNC Wilmington took care of Grambling State 3-0 (30-10, 30-22, 30-21) behind the play of senior Bea Gerevich. The Budapest, Hungary native recorded a triple-double with 15 kills, 26 assists and 10 digs. She also had six service aces and one block.
In the first match of the day, the Roadrunners held off the Seahawks of UNCW, 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-25). Daniel posted 21 kills for UTSA, while Strikland added 42 assists. Gerevich recorded 29 assists and 13 digs to go along with seven kills in a losing effort.
Tulsa (5-3) will face Grambling State (4-7) at 11 a.m. on Saturday before concluding the tournament with a 3 p.m. match against UNC Wilmington (3-6). Grambling State and Texas-San Antonio will play each other at 1 p.m.
Admission is free on Saturday as fans can enjoy Hurricane volleyball action in part of Tulsa Helping Tulsans.
