Hurricane Volleyball Splits in the Big Easy

New Orleans, La. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday as part of the 2003 Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament in New Orleans, La. TU swept UMKC 3-0 (30-19, 30-22, 32-30) before dropping a 3-0 (30-23, 37-35, 30-22) decision to host Tulane.
Playing in its home gym, Fogelman Arena, the Green Wave used a 58-45 advantage in kills for the sweep. Three Tulane players recorded double-figures in kills, led by Anastasia Kenon's 17 kills. Sophomore Kelli Dickson, twin sister of TU's Kasi Dickson, led the Green Wave with 26 assists.
Junior Dana Weddle led the Golden Hurricane attach with 13 kills, while fellow junior Kristin Bailey added 10 kills. Setter Vanessa Thon picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 31 assists and 11 digs.
A trio of juniors again led the Hurricane attack in TU's victory over UMKC, as Lindsay Eaves posted a match-high 17 kills without committing a hitting error in 25 attacks. Thon finished her third consecutive with 40 or more assists with 40. Bailey added 11 more kills as well. Senior Nathalia Araujo recorded a match-high eight digs to go along with four service aces. Thon also added four aces.
Not only did the Hurricane record its lowest number of hitting errors (13) against the Kangaroos, TU also posted its lowest number of attacks for a match this season (109). The 15 aces served by TU also was a season best.
Tulsa (8-4) will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a 5 p.m. match against Centenary. The Golden Hurricane, who has never lost to the Ladies, will tune up for Western Athletic Conference play as TU travels to Nevada on Sept. 27th to open the WAC schedule. Tulsa will also face Fresno State on Sept. 29th in Fresno, Calif.
