Volleyball Wins 2004 Opener, 3-1

The University of Tulsa volleyball team won its 2004 season opener with a 3-1 decision over North Texas on Wednesday night.

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team won its season opener with a 3-1 (26-30, 30-25, 30-25, 30-25) victory over North Texas at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday night before a crowd of 112. The Golden Hurricane used a 68-58 kill advantage, while out hitting UNT .259 to .190. Tulsa had three players with double-figure kill performances, led by sophomore Joyce Silva with 22 kills. Seniors Lindsay Eaves and Dana Weddle also contributed 12 and 10 kills respectively. Fellow senior Vanessa Thon posted 29 assists, while junior Evyn Bandy recorded 24 assists to go along with 11 digs. The Hurricane bounced back after losing the first game of the match. UNT capitalized on nine TU hitting errors and another four receiving errors for the win, even though Tulsa posted an 18-14 advantage in kills. The opposite happened in game two, as Tulsa took advantage of eight hitting miscues by the Mean Green and four more serving errors, even though UNT out hit the Hurricane 19-14 in kills. There were 13 ties and eight lead changes in the second game. Tulsa used a .200-.059 hitting advantage in the third game to hold on for the 30-25 victory. Both teams hit the ball well in the fourth game, however the Hurricane posted 22 kills in the game to go along with a .450 hitting average. Silva recorded eight kills in the game to lead the Hurricane. UNT was led by Taylor Lawrence with 18 kills, as the Mean Green also had three players in double-figure kills. Katy Prokof and Brittney Gregory posted 15 and 14 kills respectively. The win avenges a three-game sweep of the Hurricane to UNT last season. Tulsa improves its overall lead in the series to 10-6. The Golden Hurricane will travel to Lafayette, La., on Friday for the Hirbana Bank Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
