Golden Hurricane Falls to Nevada in Five-Game Thiller

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad dropped its WAC opener on Thursday night 3-2 (30-22, 25-30, 32-30, 30-32, 15-12) to Nevada. Sophomore Joyce Silva recorded 23 kills off the bench for the Hurricane, while senior Vanessa Thon recorded a match-high 66 assists.
Tulsa could not over come 33 hitting errors, five in the fifth and deciding game, and 12 service errors. TU had 76 kills, compared to 77 for the Wolf Pack. Junior Salaia Salave`a led Nevada with a match-high 28 kills.
Three blocking errors were critical for the Hurricane as well. Serving for the game in the third at 29-28, Silva was called for being in the net. The point tied the game and Nevada went on to win the game.
An enthusiastic crowd of 194 watched as the Hurricane took Nevada to five games for the first time in nine matches with the Wolf Pack. The loss snapped a six match winning streak for TU, while Nevada extended a conference winning streak to three, dating back to the end of last season.
Junior Evyn Bandy led TU in digs with a match-high 24, while freshman Kassiana Urnau added 19. A total of five Hurricane players recorded double-figures in digs as sophomore Amy Meyer, senior Patricia Marques and Thon all added 11 digs apiece.
Senior Lindsay Eaves continued her hot play with 16 kills and a team high .325 hitting percentage. Urnau also added 15 kills as she and Thon posted double-doubles.
TU will host Fresno State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., in the Reynolds Center. Fans with a ticket to the TU/SMS football game will receive free admission to the volleyball match.
