Lafayette, La. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad improved its record to 5-0 on the young season with a pair of victories at the Hibernia Bank Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Tulsa defeated Mississippi State in the first match of Saturday, 3-0 (30-26, 30-19, 30-28) and won the tournament with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 30-24) victory over Northwestern State. Sophomore transfer Joyce Silva led the Hurricane in kills for both matches with 17 against the Bulldogs and 14 against the Lady Demons. The outside hitter currently has 102 kills on the season in five matches, averaging 5.36 kills per game. The sweep of MSU was the first three-game victory of the season for TU. It was also the first time this year the Hurricane won the first game of a match. Tulsa won the match with solid defense and serving. TU recorded 43 digs, while holding MSU to a .127 team hitting percentage. Tulsa also recorded six team blocks to go along with eight service aces. Senior Vanessa Thon broke the school record for aces in a career with three more against Northwestern State. She has posted 132 during her tenure at TU. The previous record was 130 over four years by former Hurricane standout Kristien Van Lierop (1997-2000). The Hurricane kept up the hot defense against the Lady Demons with 11 team blocks, including 16 block assists. TU also recorded 56 digs in the three-game contest. Silva again led the Hurricane attack with 14 kills to go along with 12 digs for her third double-double of the season. Thon added 21 assists while fellow senior Patricia Marques contributed 14 digs.
