Tulsa, Okla. - After a crowd of 256 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center showed their appreciation to this year's senior class, The University of Tulsa volleyball squad showed its appreciation to the trio by defeating pre-season Conference USA favorite, Rice, 3-0 (30-19, 34-32, 30-23) on Sunday afternoon.
Tulsa's biggest performance was by sophomore Kassiana Urnau who finished with 21 kills as well as a pair of aces and a pair of solo blocks. Junior Germana Hilario also reached double-figures in kills for the Golden Hurricane, with 14. Sophomore Julia Silva added 42 assists while senior Evyn Wills finished with 15 digs.
It was the final home match for Dana Weddle, Sam Rutherford and Wills. The trio has combined for 70 wins over four seasons and will finish as the first TU class with a winning percentage over .600. Earlier this season Wills not only broke the school record for digs in a match, she also set new heights for digs in a season and in a career. Weddle ranks in the top-five in six of the nine career categories kept by the team. She is second all-time in kills, becoming the second person in TU history to record 1,000 kills. Rutherford's career hitting percentage of .256 ranks third all-time at TU, while she also ranks in the top-10 for total blocks as well.
Tulsa will now travel down Lewis Ave., on Tuesday to face cross-town rival ORU at 7 p.m. TU then returns to C-USA action playing Tulane at College Station, Texas on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. A trip to El Paso, Texas, to face the Miners of UTEP on Sunday, Nov. 13, will conclude the regular season for the Hurricane.
