Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad used a pair of 30+ assist performances from sophomore Julia Silva to win both of its opening day contests at the Hurricane Invitational. The Tournament is being played at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the TU campus.
Tulsa defeated Lamar, 3-0 (30-15, 36-34, 30-21) in its opening contest. TU then finished the day's play with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-21, 30-16) victory over Texas-Pan American. Eleven of the 12 players on TU's roster registered at least one kill on the day. The only player without one was senior libero Evyn Wills. In collegiate volleyball, her position is not allowed to make an attack during a rally.
Sophomore Kassiana Urnau led TU with 10 kills against Lamar, while senior Sam Rutherford posted a team-high nine kills against UTPA in the nightcap. Tulsa out hit the Cardinals 52-37 in kills and .279-.128 in hitting percentage. The margin was even greater against UTPA. TU posted 49 kills as a team to the Broncs 31. The Hurricane also held UTPA to a team hitting percentage of .032, while posting another .279 percentage of its own.
Silva led TU with 36 assists against Lamar and 38 against UTPA. She also added 11 digs in the first match for her first double-double of the season. Wills led the Hurricane in digs for both contests with 15 and 18 respectively.
In other action, Utah State opened play with a pair of wins also. The Aggies defeated Fordham, 3-0 (30-25, 30-16, 31-29) to start the day. USU also defeated Lamar, 3-1 (26-30, 30-20, 30-22, 30-28). Fordham defeated UTPA, 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-18) to go 1-1 on the day.
The tournament will conclude on Saturday, as UTPA and Lamar will start the festivities at 10 a.m. Tulsa and Fordham will play at noon, followed by UTPA and Utah State at 2 p.m. The evening session will have Lamar facing Fordham at 5 p.m., then conclude with Utah State and Tulsa playing at 7 p.m.
