The University of Tulsa split a pair of decisions Saturday on the final day of the Hurricane Invitational. TU defeated Fordham in the second match of the day, 3-1 (30-14, 27-30, 30-22, 37-35), before falling to Utah State in the championship match, 3-1 (22-30, 30-22, 28-30, 26-30). The Golden Hurricane finished the round-robin event and opened the season with a 3-1 record.
Junior Amy Meyer and sophomore Kassiana Urnau led the Hurricane with 13 kills apiece against Fordham. Setter Julia Silva also added 12 kills, along with 45 assists and 10 digs for her first triple-double of the season. It was the first triple-double at TU since current assistant coach Tammy Madjid recorded one during the 2002 season.
Senior Evyn Wills led three Hurricane players with double-digit dig performances with 25. Urnau also contributed 12 digs, in addition to Silva's 10. Senior Dana Weddle recorded seven blocks defensively as TU posted 11 blocks as a team against the Rams.
Tulsa roared out of the gates posting a .407 hitting percentage in the first game. The Hurricane cooled but still managed to out hit the Rams .192-.124, forcing 35 Fordham errors.
In the championship match, TU still owned a slight advantage in kills (66-65). However, the Hurricane could not overcome 30 hitting errors, especially while the game was tight. Junior Germana Hilario led Tulsa with 19 kills, while Urnau added 14 more. Silva posted 50 assists, while Urnau recorded her second double-double of the day with 16 digs. Freshman Kelsey Wood added 10 digs also.
Tulsa will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for the New Mexico State Tournament next weekend. The Hurricane will face Cincinnati on Friday, Sept. 2, then have a re-match with Texas-Pan American on Saturday, Sept. 3.
