Tulsa Falls In Conference USA Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB forced the Hurricane into 39 turnovers on Wednesday night as Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson had 13 points, five assists, and four steals to lead the Blazers to an 84-54 victory over Tulsa on Wednesday night.
The Blazers scored 52 points off turnovers, while in comparison Tulsa had two points off UAB turnovers.
UAB improved to 11-3 and 1-0 in Conference USA play, while Tulsa dropped to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in league action.
UAB began the game slowly, while Tulsa began the game with with a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes, and held an 11-10 lead before UAB took the lead for good at 12-10 at the 13:00 mark of the first half.
The Blazers used a 21-7 lead to take a 29-17 lead with 7:01 left in the first period. Tulsa cut the UAB lead to nine points at the 5:57 mark, the closest the game would be for the rest of the 25 minutes.
The Blazers held a 47-23 lead at halftime, as the Hurricane already had 24 turnovers, only four turnovers shy of a season-high for an entire game. Tulsa trailed by as many as 38 points in the second half. For the game Anthony Price had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane outrebounded UAB 44-22, but UAB's 39-8 advantage in turnovers made the difference.
Tulsa plays host to Southern Mississippi on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Center.
