Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa moved to 6-1 on the season with a 79-54 victory over Jackson State (4-6) on Monday night in front of 5,163 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Hurricane had three double-figure scorers, led by junior Rod Earls' 18 points, followed by 13 from senior Charles Ramsdell and 11 from sophomore Ray Reese.
The Hurricane defense held the Tigers to a season-low 54 points, but the nation's leading scorer Trey Johnson, who came into the game averaging 29.8 points, scored a game-high 31 points, including 22 of Jackson State's 37 second-half points.
"I thought our guys did a great job defensively. We were very alert. It was phenomenal defense to hold them to 17 points in the first half," said Tulsa Head Coach Doug Wojcik. "Offensively, we shot the ball real well as a team, and we shot the three ball well, especially Rod."
Jackson State's 54 points was also a season-low for a Tulsa opponent, three points less than the previous-low when Oral Roberts scored just 57 points last week.
Tulsa built a 23-point lead after a 13-4 run at the 7:27 mark on a Ramsdell 10-foot jumper. The Hurricane increased its lead to 27 points with 3:26 left in the contest and expanded it to a game-high 30 point margin with 2:33 remaining on a Ray Reese three-pointer to make the score 75-45.
Ramsdell scored all 13 of his points in the second half, while connecting on 4-of-5 shots after intermission, while Reese nailed nine second-half points.
JSU's Johnson came out in the second half and scored the Tigers' first seven points. Johnson's layup at 12:11 cut the Hurricane lead to 14 points before the Hurricane scored the next eight points to go back up by 22 points.
The Hurricane held a 19-point halftime lead, 36-17, behind 15 points from Earls while the Tulsa defense held Johnson to just nine first-half points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field.
Tulsa started the game on a 7-2 run and took its first double-digit lead at the 13:17 mark on two free throws from Jamel McLean that made the score 15-5.
Calvin Walls' free throw snapped a 2:30 minute drought in the first half that had the teams stuck on 20-10. After Walls free throw at the 8:06 mark, the Hurricane failed to score until a Earls' layup at the 5:34 mark, making the score 23-14.
Tulsa is back in action against Southern Arkansas on Sunday afternoon at the Reynolds Center. Tip-off is 2:05 pm.
