Tulsa Loses Opener Against Hampton

COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- Hampton's Vincent Simpson scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half as the Pirates defeated Tulsa 72-55 on Sunday in the first round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. It was the season opener for both teams.

Hampton's Rashad West scored 14 first-half points on his way to 22 for Hampton (1-0). Matthew Pilgrim added another 11 points and seven rebounds.

Ben Uzoh scored 13 and Glenn Andrews, from nearby Alexandria, Virginia, scored 12 to lead Tulsa. Jerome Jordan added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds in 19 minutes.

"I thought Hampton kicked our butt in every phase of the game. They out-quicked us, they were more active, they won more loose balls, and had more deflections," said Tulsa Head Coach Doug Wojcik. Wojcik was pleased with the play of the freshman Andrews. "Glenn is a tough kid and was talking in the huddle. He wants to shoot it and wants to take it off the dribble. I'm really pleased with him."

Hampton led by as many as eight points in the first half and went into halftime with a 34-28 advantage. The Pirates, picked to win the MEAC Conference title, used a 15-0 run in the first seven minutes of the second half for a 19-point lead at the 13:22 mark. Tulsa scored just eight points in the first 10 minutes after the break.

Hampton built its biggest lead to 24 points with a 60-36 lead at the 8:27 point of the second half.

For the game, Hampton shot 42-percent from the field, while Tulsa connected on 34-percent and suffered 19 turnovers, compared to only 13 for the Pirates.

With the win, Hampton advanced to Monday's College Park region final, in which the Pirates will play region host Maryland. The Golden Hurricane play a consolation game against North Florida on Monday at 6:00 pm (ET).
