Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad held an early 16-12 lead in the opening game of Friday's Conference USA match with UAB. However, a 7-1 Blazer run gave UAB all the momentum it would need in cruising to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-15, 36-34) victory at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The win improves UAB to 15-11 on the year, 10-3 in league play. Tulsa falls to 22-7 overall and 9-4 during C-USA matches. The 3-0 sweep marked the first time TU had been swept at home since joining C-USA.
Senior Fabiola Nepomuceno led TU with 17 kills, while freshman Emma Ridley contributed 11 more for the Hurricane. Senior Julia Silva posted 40 assists, just missing out on her 26th double-double of the season with only nine digs. Junior Malorey Grove led the Hurricane with 15 digs, with freshman Nicole Boyle posting double-figures as well with 12.
UAB held a 20-12 advantage in kills after the opening stanza, which ballooned to a 37-24 advantage at the break. Playing its worst two opening games of the season, TU was held to a season low .095 hitting percentage in the second game. Tulsa improved in the final stanza with a 25-22 advantage in the kills, however nine hitting errors doomed TU's come-back bid.
The Golden Hurricane will close out its home schedule on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matinee with Memphis at the Reynolds Center. It will be the final home match for Silva and Nepomuceno, two of the winningest players in TU history.
