UAB Stymies Tulsa 62-57

Tulsa, Okla. - UAB came out blistering in the first half but it took the Blazers over six minutes to score its first point in the second-half en route to a 62-57 victory against Tulsa in front of 5,169 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday night.
Tulsa dropped to 16-10 overall and 6-7 in Conference USA play, while UAB improved to 14-13 and also 6-7 in league play.
For the game, UAB shot 55-percent from three-point range, connecting on 11-of-20 three pointers, while the Hurricane managed to hit on just 37-perent from the field and 34-percent from three-point range.
Darold Crow was Tulsa's lone double-figure scorer with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Rod Earls had nine points, while Calvin Walls and Brett McDade each had 8 points, Jamel McLean had a game-high 10 rebounds. UAB was led by Kinnard with 17 points, followed by Wen Mukubu's 16.
Tulsa came out in the second-half and scored the first 11 points and took its first lead of the game at 32-31 on a Calvin Walls four-foot jumper in the lane. Walls increased the Hurricane lead to 34-31 on a dunk at the 13:29 mark.
After a stoppage of play due to a clock malfuntion, the Blazers gained back their momentum that had been missing from the first half. UAB scored its first points of the second-half on a three-pointer from the top of the key by Mike Davis, Jr., at the 13:13 mark.
The Blazers jumped ahead by one point 39-38 on a Lawrence Kinnard three-point basket, and the Blazers took a 48-41 lead on another Kinnard trey at the 7:38 mark, completing a 12-3 run since the 10:54 mark.
UAB came out blazing in the first-half connecting on its first six three-pointers and taking its first double-digit lead at 20-9 on its fifth straight three-pointer as Mukubu hit his first of the game at the 13:42 mark.
The Blazers had its biggest first-half lead of 13 points at 29-16 on a three-pointer by Maurice Gibbs at the 6:56 mark.
UAB cooled off somewhat in the first half, hitting on just one of its next six three-point attempts. In the final 4:32 before halftime, Tulsa out-scored UAB by a 7-2 margin. The Blazers scored just two points in the final 6:50 of the first half.
Tulsa's McDade launched a half-court shot at the first-half expired to cut the Blazers lead to eight points, 31-23.
The Hurricane closes out the home season on Saturday night against the UCF Golden Knights. Game time is 7:05 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The game is the last home contest for Tulsa seniors Darold Crow and Charles Ramsdell.
