Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa knocked down five free throws in the final 1:40 to hang on for a 63-60 victory over Marshall on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 5,310 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Rod Earls led three Tulsa players in double-figures with 18 points, followed by 12 from Ben Uzoh and 10 from Brett McDade. Travis Aikens paced Marshall with 18 points. For the game, both teams shot under 40-percent but the Hurricane converted 20-of-26 free throws for 77-percent.
Tulsa improved to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA action, while Marshall dropped to 9-14 and 4-5.
The score was tied 11 times and there were 12 lead changes in the hard-fought contest. Marshal's Chris Ross knotted the score at 58-58 with 1:48 remaining in the game, before Tulsa would win the game at the free throw line on one free throw by Uzoh and two each from Earls and Reese.
After a 30-30 halftime score, the Hurricane began the second half on a 10-4 run to take a 40-34 lead. Tulsa scored the first five points on a three-pointer by Ben Uzoh and a two-point hook shot by Jerome Jordan. Marshall closed the gap to two points, 41-39, at the 12:49 mark.
Tre Whitted's two-point shot in the lane tied the game at 45-45 with 8:55 left, but Earls put the Hurricane back ahead quickly with a two-pointer of his own. The Herd took its first lead of the second half, 48-47, at the 7:47 mark on a three-pointer by Mark Dorris.
The lead went back and forth on the next four possessions. Marshall tied the score 53-53 with 4:00 remaining, but Walls' was 1-of-2 from the line to put Tulsa head by one, and followed with a layup off a missed shot to give the Hurricane a three-point 56-53 lead with 2:54 left.
Marshall answered on a Jean Francois Bo Grebe layup, but Tulsa's Earls streaked down the right side for a layup of his own at the 2:17 mark pushing the Hurricane lead back to three points., 58-55. That's when Ross hit his three-pointer to tie the score at 58.
The score was tied 30-30 at halftime, as The Hurricane and Thundering Herd went back and forth in the first half. There were eight ties and six lead changes in the first half.
The biggest lead in the first half for either team was four points coming from the Hurricane twice. Rod Earls had a high of 10 points, while Aikens led the way for Marshall with 14 first-half points.
Jerome Jordan and Reese were in the starting lineup tonight for the first time this season, giving the Hurricane seven different starting lineups on the season and 11 of 15 roster players with at least one start.
Tulsa will be back on the road for a Saturday contest against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, Miss. Tip-off time is 4:00 pm.
