Tulsa Volleyball Drops Two in Season Opener

Springfield, Mo. - The University of Tulsa dropped a pair of matches to Sacramento State, 3-2 (30-16, 30-19, 29-31, 21-30, 15-2) and Missouri State, 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-20) at the T.J. Sales/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational.
Sacramento State, improving to 2-0 on the season, used a 71-50 advantage in kills and a .196-.099 hitting percentage to overpower the Hurricane. Senior Fabiola Nepomuceno led TU with 15 kills, while freshman Emma Ridley also contributed 14 kills. Senior Julia Silva posted her first double-double of the season with 38 assists and 13 digs. Nepomuceno also recorded a double-double with 14 digs. Junior Malorey Grove posted a match-high 31 digs for the Hurricane.
The Hornets posted a 30-6 record last season while winning their fourth consecutive conference title. In their first match of the day Head Coach Debby Colberg won her 800th career victory, with a 3-0 sweep of Delaware State.
Facing its second consecutive NCAA Tournament team of the day, Tulsa again lost the kill column. The Bears owned a 52-31 advantage in kills and a .232-.044 advantage in hitting percentage. It was the 16th time Missouri State defeated the Hurricane in a series that dates back to Tulsa's first season in 1976.
Ridley led the Hurricane attack with 10 kills, while Silva posted her second double-double of the day with 22 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Nicole Boyle posted a team-high 16 digs for the Hurricane.
Tulsa will face UMKC at 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a 5 p.m. match against Delaware State to close out the event.
