NEW ORLEANS - Five players scored in double figures, led by Bryson Pope's 16 points to lead The University of Tulsa basketball team to a, 65-61, win at Tulane, Saturday afternoon at Fogelman Arena.
The Golden Hurricane (10-9, 3-2 C-USA) got its first road victory of the season, while Tulane fell to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in league play.
True to the recent history of this series, the game went down to the wire - six of the last seven meetings have been decided by four points or fewer. Tulsa led, 59-58, with 53 seconds remaining after a Tulane three-pointer. Pope was fouled on the play coming out of the timeout and made both free throws to give TU a, 61-58 lead.
Tulsa made nine free throws in the final two minutes of the game, and held the Green Wave scoreless for most of the final minute. After the three pointer with 53 seconds left, Tulane hit a three with two seconds remaining, but by that time, the Hurricane led, 65-58, and had all but sealed the victory.
Steven Idlet scored 10 points and led TU with nine rebounds, while Justin Hurtt and Jordan Clarkson each tallied 11 points. Scottie Haralson added 10 points. Kendall Timmons led Tulane with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Both teams shot 40 percent from the floor, both 22-for-55 shooting. The Hurricane, however, made one more three-pointer - eight - and three more free throws than the Green Wave. TU went 13-for-15 from the line.
Clarkson hit a bucket in the paint with 3:00 left, which proved to be TU's final field goal. By making nine free throws the rest of the way, Tulsa was able to pull away from the Tulane charge.
The Golden Hurricane led by 11 points, 36-25, with 17:54 left in the game, but the Green Wave closed to two points at, 43-41, with 11:18 remaining. Tulsa got the lead back to four points on a layup by Pope.
Although TU led the entire second half, Tulane got within one point on three occasions, the last with 53 seconds left, but Tulsa held off the Wave for the win.
The game began as a three-point contest. Tulsa hit its first three shots from beyond the arc, while Tulane made its first two. Haralson, Hurtt and Pope each made a three-pointer to start the game to give the Hurricane a, 9-6, lead.
The Golden Hurricane led, 20-12, before the Green Wave tied the score at 20 apiece.
Tulsa then finished the half on a, 14-5, run, taking a, 34-25, lead into the locker room.
