KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 22-ranked University of Tulsa women's tennis team defeated No. 33 N.C. State 4-1 Friday morning at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in the first round of the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

The Golden Hurricane (3-0) picked up the doubles point and won three singles matches, relinquishing the lone mark to the Wolfpack (2-1) during solo action at the fourth position.

Tulsa moves into the second round of the 64-team tournament for the third time in four years and awaits the winner of the No. 19 Tennessee (host)/No. 58 UC Davis match to be played later today.

The regional championship match will be played at 1 p.m. Jan. 28 for a spot in the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va. (Feb. 10-13).

Junior Michelle Farley and freshman Isaura Enrique topped Sophie Nelson and Christy Sipes 8-1 from the third position, and senior Bonny Davidson and sophomore Samantha Vickers secured the doubles point for TU by defeating Ashley Miller and Joelle Kissell 8-3 from the second court.

The match between seniors Anastasia Erofeeva/Ewa Szatkowska and Tatiana Illova/Elisha Hande was stopped with TU's duo up 7-3.

The competition was knotted at 1-1 for a short time after Enrique fell 6-4, 6-4 to Hande at No. 4 singles.

Szatkowska took down Miller 6-1, 6-4 at the third position to put Tulsa back on top 2-1, which was a lead the Golden Hurricane would not relinquish.

Farley made it 3-1 in favor of the blue and gold with a solid 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 effort over Chloe Smith from the fifth flight.

Erofeeva, ranked No. 78 in the nation, posted one of the biggest wins of her career to seal the match for TU. She defeated No. 40 Kissell at the top of the lineup 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The win for Erofeeva was her third-career triumph over a ranked opponent, and the highest-ranked opponent she had ever beaten (No. 107 Mariam Kurdadze of Tulane on Sept. 19, 2010 and No. 107 Natasha Marks of Arizona Nov. 5, 2011).

Matches from No. 63-ranked Vickers and Davidson were both halted once Tulsa wrapped up the victory. Vickers was leading Illova 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 2-1, while Davidson was on top of Sipes 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-5.
