Philadelphia, Pa. - With just 1:21 left to play in the first overtime period, Temple scored the Golden Goal to earn a 3-2 victory over the Tulsa women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa. The Golden Hurricane fell to 7-5-1 on the season and 1-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Owls moved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the league.
"I didn't think we came out very well, we were a little sluggish in the first half," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "After they scored on the penalty kick, we got focused and Rachel scored a good equalizing goal. We played well at times and I was proud of the way they kept working, but it just seemed to slip away from us in overtime. We have to do a better job of playing for 90 minutes. We can't wait for something good or bad to happen, we have to stay sharp and focused the entire game."
The first half ticked off the clock scoreless, but Erin Lafferty put the Owls on the board at the 55:55 mark on a penalty kick. Rachel Thun countered with a goal eight minutes later to even the score, but Kelly Farrell put Temple ahead once again in the 69th minute.
Christina Holmes found the back of the net at the 81:44 mark as she scored off a pass from Roman Edwards that was played into the box. Neither team was able to score in the final eight minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Kayla Cunningham scored the game-winner at the 98:39 mark off a throw in by Taylor Trusky to give the Owls the victory.
Temple had a 14-10 lead in shots, but Tulsa had a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Thun had a team-best three shots, while Holmes and Kajal Parmar each had two attempts. Courtney McKeon logged all 98:39 in goal and picked up three saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 5th against UConn. Game time is set for 12:00 pm (CT) in Storrs, Conn.
