The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 67-63 decision to Indiana State on Sunday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. TU fell to 2-6 on the season, while ISU moved to 3-6 overall.
"We thought we were in pretty good shape because it was a one-point game at halftime and Kelsee Grovey had only played 10 minutes and Ashley Clark had only played nine, so we thought having them ready to go in the second half would be an advantage," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We just couldn't get defensive stops when we needed to and on the offensive end we would miss layups and free throws when we need them. Indiana State did an excellent job guarding us and making it hard to score."
Teanna Reid had a team-best 13 points and seven rebounds, while Kelsee Grovey added 12 points, Liesl Spoerl had eight, and both Crystal Polk and Erika Wakefield scored seven.
TU shot 37-percent from the field, 42-percent from behind the arc and were 13-of-19 from the charity stripe for 68-percent, compared to ISU's 41-percent from the field, 39-percent from three-point range and 55-percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line.
There were six tied scores and nine lead changes in the contest. Indiana State never led by more than five points, while TU had the nine-point advantage in the second quarter. Tulsa led the game for 20:11, while Indiana State had the advantage for 14:48. The score was tied for 5:01 off the clock.
Tulsa had a 39-35 lead in rebounds, while Indiana State had a 14-9 advantage in assists and a 6-2 lead in blocks. Both teams had eight steals.
Tulsa climbed to a 15-7 lead at the 2:52 mark in the first quarter, but the Sycamores ended the first frame with a 4-0 run and a three-pointer by Joyea Marshall to start the second quarter pulled ISU to within one, 15-14, at the 9:30 mark.
TU once again inched ahead, this time taking a nine-point advantage, 28-19, with 3:08 on the clock, but Indiana State closed out the half with a 10-2 run to go into the break with a one-point deficit, 30-29.
ISU took their first lead of the contest, 31-30, on a layup by Alexis Newbolt to start the third quarter, but two free throws made by Polk took the lead back for the Golden Hurricane.
Marshall then came down the court and hit a trey and the Sycamores climbed to two five-point leads (38-33 and 40-35), before Tulsa battled back to tie the game 43-all. ISU took the lead once again on a three-pointer by Jennifer Mackowiak, but TU tied the score again at 48-48.
Mackowiak hit a trey and Cierra Ceazer recorded a layup as Indiana State took their third five-point lead, 53-48, but Tulsa fought back to tie the score at 55-all.
This time it was Rhagen Smith that hit a three to put the Sycamores back on top, but the teams traded baskets and Grovey hit all four of her free throw attempts down the stretch to put Tulsa up one, 63-62, with 51-seconds remaining.
In the final 44-seconds of the game, Ashley Taia hit four free throws and Ceazer hit one for the final, 67-63, score.
The Sycamores had four players in double figures, including a team-best 18 points by Mackowiak. Taia had 13 points, Marshall 11 and Ceazer 10. Taia had a team-high six rebounds and three assists.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, December 9 against Oklahoma. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Reynolds Center.
