ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Tulsa Volleyball team was swept by UCF on the road Friday evening, falling in a tightly contested match 25-22, 25-23, 26-24. Erica Bohannon recorded a team-leading 12 kills on the night for the Hurricane while Rebecca Reeve added 10, including four in the first set as she finished with her 10th double-double of the season.
One of those Reeve kills tied the opening frame at 8-8 before the Hurricane grabbed the lead and extended it to two after an Ashton Anderson service ace. After UCF used a 4-0 run to go ahead 13-11, Reeve converted on a kill that sparked a 3-0 Tulsa run of their own to pull within two after falling down five. TU pulled within two at 21-19, but could not rally as they fell in the set 25-22.
The Hurricane looked to avoid going down 0-2 heading into the break for the fourth straight match, but could not do so as they dropped a tightly contested second set, 25-23. UCF used a 5-0 run to extend their lead to five at 11-6 as their attacking percentage reached .300 for the match before Tulsa steadily chipped away at the home squad's lead with solid defensive play led by Brooke Berryhill's 10 digs through the first two sets and a more effective attack.
Bohannon was essential to the TU run in the second, recording her first two kills of the frame as she combined with two Reeve kills to pull within two at 15-13, the closest they came to the Knights since they trailed 8-6 early. Back-to-back UCF errors tied things up at 15-15 prior to another Bohannon kill that tied the score. UCF went ahead 19-17, but TU responded with consecutive kills from Trinity Alualu and Emily Thorson to pull within one. Rachel Moore's fifth kill of the evening tied it up at 22-22 and Bohannon brought the Hurricane within one as UCF was on set point.
Tulsa looked to win their third straight third set in as many matches after the break in another tight set, but could not keep the streak going as UCF took advantage of a few TU misques late to win 26-24.
Two early Bohannon kills gave Tulsa a two score lead before the Hurricane pushed it to five after a pair of kills from Alualu and Haley Coulter. UCF responded to cut the lead down to one at 10-9 before Bohannon once again extended the lead to four at 13-9 and 15-11. The Knights brought the match to a deadlock at 16-16, taking their first lead of the set at 17-17 before Tulsa regained the lead by way of a Reeve kill, 20-19. Up one late, the Hurricane committed three straight costly errors as they fell in the set.
The Hurricane will wrap up their four-match road stretch on Sunday when they take on USF at 12 p.m.
