Hurricane Volleyball Falls in Four Sets on Road at USF

10/23/2016 2:22:00 PM | Volleyball

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tulsa Volleyball team dropped their seventh straight match as they fell on the road to USF in four sets (25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 25-21) on Sunday afternoon. The Hurricane (13-9, 2-8 AAC) hit an effective .242 in the match as three attackers finished with double-digit kills for a Tulsa squad that had 61 on the day.

One of those attackers, Erica Bohannon, pitched in four kills early for the Hurricane, first to put them up 2-0 in the first set before retaking the lead at 4-3. Jaime Rahilly gave TU their largest lead of the set at 9-6 with one of her 11 kills, but USF (15-7, 6-4 AAC) would respond with a 4-0 run to take a one score lead. Emily Thorson pushed the lead to two at 14-12 and again at 16-14 with two of her six kills on the day. With Tulsa leading 22-20 late in the set, USF put together a 5-0 set-sealing run to take the first 25-22.

Tulsa responded strongly in the second set, leading by double-digits most of the way as they knotted the match up heading into the break, 25-15. After USF struck first, Tulsa used an 8-0 run behind kills from Bohannon, Rebecca Reeve, and Rachel Moore. Moore finished with a .611 hitting percentage on 18 opportunities.

The Hurricane stretched their lead to double-digits for the first time in the set after two straight USF attacking errors prior to Rahilly recording two kills to extend the lead to 13 at 19-6. USF would provide some resistance late in the frame, cutting the TU lead back down to single-digits with a 5-0 run on set point to put the score at 24-15 before Bohannon secured the win.

The Hurricane put together a furious late rally in the third set to come within striking distance after trailing by nine, but could not complete the comeback as USF took the third 25-22. USF scored eight of 10 points in the early moments of the set to go up 14-6 before TU steadily began to chip away at the Bulls' lead after Bohannon and Reeve combined for kills to cut the deficit down to five, 14-9. USF stretched their lead to the largest of the set, nine, at 20-11 before another Tulsa run brought them back in the set.

TU scored seven of nine points to pull within two after a Brooke Berryhill service ace brought the count to 23-21. Bohannon brought the Hurricane within two on USF's set point, but a TU error secured the Bulls set win.

Tulsa played from behind in the opening moments of a tight fourth set, eventually falling behind by three before tying the set for the first and only time at 12-12 after a 3-0 run on a Thorson kill, Moore ace, and Rahilly strike. USF answered with four straight kills to force a TU timeout as they took a 16-12 lead that they never relinquished in a 25-21 win.

Berryhill led the way defensively with 14 digs as one of four Hurricane that finished with double-digit digs, joined by Taylor Horsfall, Reeve, and Ashton Anderson.

Tulsa will return to the Reynolds Center for their first home match since Oct. 9 as they take on Tulane on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
