
Golden Hurricane Volleyball Falls in Four Sets Against Memphis

TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane (14-16, 8-10 American) was back on the court at the Reynolds Center as it hosted the Memphis Tigers (10-20, 3-15 American) on Sunday. Emily Thorson posted a career-high 30 kills, but Tulsa was lost to the Tigers, 3-1 (26-24, 27-25, 19-25, 25-21).
The Golden Hurricane opened the first set with a 10-5 run. Memphis clawed back and tied the set at 21-21. The Tigers went on to win the first set, 26-24. Emily Thorson tallied a set-high eight kills. Mariah Pardo picked up a set-high 11 assists. Taylor Horsfall collected seven digs, while Ashton Anderson added five digs. Pardo and Callie Cook each had a block assist.
In the second set, Thorson posted nine kills for a set high. Pardo assisted on a set-high 14 kills. Horsfall scooped up eight digs, while Pardo chipped in with seven. Ebony Carter picked up a solo block, while Pardo and Cook each had a block assist. The Tigers started the second set on a 6-4 run. The Golden Hurricane was resilient as they stormed back and took a 13-11 lead. Tulsa extended its lead to 18-13, but Memphis would come from behind to win the second set, 27-25.
After the intermission, Tulsa went on an 8-4 run to start the third set. Memphis came back and took a 12-10 lead. The Hurricane did not give up and battled back to regain the lead, 21-17. The Golden Hurricane went on to win the third set, 25-19. Thorson and Rachel Moore paced the attack with four kills each. Horsfall dug up nine balls, while Thorson added five digs. Cook led the defense at the net with one solo block. Pardo accumulated 11 assists.
Tulsa jumped out early in the fourth set, 5-1, but Memphis eventually tied the set at 7-7. With the Golden Hurricane up, 12-9, the Tigers outscored Tulsa 6-1 and took a 15-13 lead. Memphis won the fourth set, 25-21. Thorson notched nine kills. Pardo posted 11 assists once again. Anderson led the defense with four digs, while Pardo added three. Carter and Emily Hubbard each had a block assist.
As a unit, Memphis had 85 digs, 58 kills, 58 assists and eight total blocks. Kelsea Bivins led the Tigers 15 kills. Alyssa Kronberg had a team-high 23 digs. Faith Myers led Memphis with 28 assists.
Thorson set a career-high with 30 kills and chipped in with 10 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Pardo posted a match-high 47 assists and added 17 digs for her 10th double-double on the year. Horsfall amassed a match-high 26 digs and now has a career total of 1,002 digs. Horsfall is eight digs away from tying the single-season record for digs in The American Athletic Conference. Anderson finished the match with 15 digs. As a team, the Hurricane combined for 81 digs, 59 kills, 57 assists, and five total blocks.
With the loss, Tulsa fell to 14-16 overall and 8-10 in The American. The Golden Hurricane returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 22, as it hosts the SMU Mustangs. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
