Cincinnati's Troy Caupain knocked down a 10-foot jumper at the 0:04 mark to give the 14th-ranked Bearcats a 57-55 victory over Tulsa Wednesday night in front of 5,002 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Hurricane was led by Jaleel Wheeler's 13 points, followed by 10 points each by Junior Etou and Martins Igbanu. TK Edogi added 8 points and had a career-high 13 boards in 17 minutes of play.
Tulsa (12-9, 6-3 AAC) shot 40.5 percent from the field against the nation's second-ranked field goal defensive team, while holding Cincinnati (20-2, 9-0 AAC) to 35-percent shooting. The Hurricane held Cincinnati to 21.5 points below its season scoring average, and out-rebounded the Bearcats by 10 boards, 38-to-28,
"Cincinnati made big plays down the stretch," said Tulsa Head Coach Frank Haith. "I thought our kids played extremely hard. A couple bang-bang plays at the end, but you have to give Cincinnati credit for making the plays that they did to win the game. We went toe-to-toe with a team ranked 14th in the country and we just didn't finish it."
Sterling Taplin's layup with 6:01 left in the game to put the Hurricane ahead by 11 points, 52-41. Tulsa led by 9 points after Etou's two free throws with 5:13 remaining on the game clock made the score 54-45, but an experienced Bearcats squad used a 12-1 run over the final 3:28 to grab the victory.
Tulsa began the game on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes before the Bearcats could put their first points on the board. The Hurricane led by nine points at one other time in the first half when Wheeler's layup put Tulsa ahead 25-16 at the 6:28 mark. Cincinnati chipped away and took its first lead, 26-25, on a Caupain three-pointer with 2:29 left in the first half. The Bearcats increased that lead to three points at 28-25 with less than two minutes to play.
The Hurricane out-scored UC 5-2 down the stretch to go into halftime even at 30-30. At the half, Tulsa had out-scored the Bearcats 18-4 in the paint, while shooting 338-percent from the field and holding Cincinnati to 30.4 percent. Etou had 7 first-half points to lead the Hurricane, while Edogi already had 10 rebounds.
Tulsa completes a 3-game homestand this Saturday against the SMU Mustangs (19-4, 9-1 AAC) with a 6 p.m. tipoff.
