
Tulsa Sweeps the Action on Day Two of Cougar Classic

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Tulsa completed the Cougar Classic sweep as it defeated the Cougars, 3-0, and the Raiders, 3-1. Emily Thorson led the Golden Hurricane with 26 kills on the day.
Tulsa 3, SIUE 0
Callie Cook and Emily Hubbard led the attack with four kills apiece. Lindsey Ledyard collected 14 assists, as Tulsa took the first set, 25-17. As a team, the Golden Hurricane hit .300 in the set and added three total blocks. Ebony Carter recorded a solo block and a block assist to lead the way defensively. Taylor Horsfall scooped up nine digs.
The Hurricane posted another strong showing in the second set with a 25-19 win. Hubbard led all attackers with five kills in the second, while Emily Thorson provided four kills. Carter and Ledyard each had two block assists.
Thorson paced Tulsa with four kills as the Golden Hurricane won the third set, 25-19. Ledyard tallied seven assists and five digs. Horsfall recorded eight digs. Defensively, the Hurricane forced seven attack errors from the Cougars.
Hubbard posted a match-high 12 kills for Tulsa while Thorson added 11 kills. Ledyard finished with a match-high 31 assists. Horsfall was a force defensively with 23 digs. Ledyard and Ashton Anderson both tallied double-digit digs with 12 and 10, respectively.
Emily Harrison and Dylynn Otte each had eight kills to lead SIUE. Samantha Knight provided 17 assists for a team high.
As a team, the Golden Hurricane defense recorded seven blocks and totaled 61 digs.
Tulsa 3, Wright State 1
The Raiders started the match 4-2, before Tulsa went on a 7-0 run to gain a 9-4 lead. The Hurricane continued to extend their lead and eventually won the first set, 25-14. Hubbard posted six kills to lead all attackers in the first set. Ledyard assisted on 10 kills. Horsfall picked up seven digs. The Golden Hurricane held Wright State to just a .064 hitting percentage.
Tulsa started the second set with three unanswered points, but Wright State battled back and pulled within one, 8-7. The match saw its first tie with the score at 15 all. The Golden Hurricane outscored the Raiders 10-5 to win the set, 25-20. Thorson and Rachel Moore each tallied five kills.
Wright State started the third set on a 9-4 run. Tulsa managed to get as close as three, with the score 23-20, but were unable to regain the lead. The Raiders won the third set, 25-21. Cook led Tulsa with five kills and Ledyard accumulated 14 assists.
The fourth set started off with a service ace, followed by a service error by Wright State's Megan Hopkins. Horsfall then picked up a service ace of her own, to give Tulsa a 2-1 lead. The Golden Hurricane extended their lead to 11-9. The Raiders tied the set up at 15-15, before they took a 19-18 lead. The Hurricane battled back and regained the lead, before winning the fourth set, 25-19. Ledyard recorded two service aces for two of the final four points. Thorson produced five kills to lead the team.
Thorson had a match-high 15 kills and picked up a double-double with 11 digs. Hubbard earned a double-double with 17 digs and 12 kills. Cook and Moore finished the match with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Horsfall joined Hubbard with 17 digs. Anderson added 10 digs.
Katie Klusman led Wright State with 15 kills. Maddie Lohmeier posted a match-high 49 assists.
Thorson was named the MVP of the Cougar Classic. Horsfall joined Thorson on the All-Tournament Team.
Tulsa improved to 4-2 on the season. The Golden Hurricane will be in action again on Friday, as they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, for the SFA Volleyball Invitational. Tulsa plays Colgate at 11 a.m. and then hosts Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m.
