Tulsa Women’s Tennis Shines on First Day of ITA Regionals

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad wrapped up the first day of the ITA Central Regional on Friday, as the team earned two singles victories and three doubles wins on the first day in Iowa.
Newcomer Megan Hopton started the day off strong for the Golden Hurricane, picking up a decisive victory over Clara Gandara Gonzales of Missouri State, 6-3, 6-1. Hopton would continue her momentum, taking down Cassie McKenzie of St. Louis, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to Saturday's singles main draw.
In doubles, the household names of Manon Meulenberg and Shura Poppe swiftly took down Ariana Rodriguez and Alba Salinas, also of St. Louis, 8-0. All-conference honoree Martina Okalova and doubles teammate Vera Ploner would follow suit, defeating Valentina Caro and Harri Proudfoot (UNI), 8-0.
The final Tulsa victory on an extremely productive day one at the ITA Central Regional came at the hands of freshman Arianna Capogrosso and her doubles partner Martha Matoula. The two would join forces to overwhelm River Hart and Kalyssa Hall of Minnesota, 8-4.
The doubles round of 32 and singles main draw are set to take place tomorrow. The first two Tulsa matches of the day will showcase Meulenberg/Poppe squaring off with doubles No. 1 seed Blanco/Rioux (Oklahoma State), while Okalova/Ploner will take on Frei/Vargas Gomez (Minnesota). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. CT.
