Taplin Named Preseason Second-Team All-Conference on Monday

PHILADELPHIA — Senior point guard Sterling Taplin was named preseason second-team all-conference in a vote by the American Athletic Conference head coaches, it was announced on Monday morning at the start of the league's media day.
Taplin is coming off a career season in 2017-18, when he averaged 11.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. The East Amherst, N.Y., native appeared and started in 30 games and also set career highs with a .462 shooting percentage and 38 3-pointers made. He scored in double-figures 18 times, led by a career-high 30-point effort in a win at UConn, and ranked fourth in the league with his 4.4 assists per outing.
During conference play, Taplin averaged 11.5 points, 4.6 assists and 3.2 rebounds, while he shot 47.5-percent. His .422 shooting percentage behind the arc during league play ranked third in the circuit and he hit at least three 3-pointers three times against conference opponents.
Taplin is one of three returning starters for the Golden Hurricane. In all, the squad returns eight letterwinners and will welcome five newcomers, three of which have Division I experience.
Taplin and senior wing DaQuan Jeffries met with national media on Monday as part of the conference's annual media day.
TU will host Northeastern State at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 for the team's only exhibition game. The squad then will open the 108th season of Golden Hurricane basketball at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Alcorn State.
Season tickets, the new Gold E-Ticket and a five-game mini plan are on sale now. In addition, group tickets (available for groups of 20 or more) also are on sale now.
