Thorson Records 1,000th Kill in 3-1 Victory over ECU

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team (13-6, 5-2) bounced back to take down ECU (12-6, 4-3), 3-1, in a conference matchup in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Emily Thorson recorded her 1,000th kill as a member of the Golden Hurricane after posting six kills in Sunday's victory. Her new total of 1,005 marks just the seventh TU athlete in program history to hit the milestone.
Also with the win, Tulsa improves to a near flawless 8-1 at home in the Reynolds Center this season.
The Golden Hurricane came out hot in the first set, dominating the Pirates, 25-11. The team hit to the tune of .308, while defending ECU well, holding it to a -.160 hitting percentage in the first frame.
Albeit closer, the Hurricane defense once again stepped up, securing the second frame, 25-19. Tulsa held ECU to another negative hitting percentage, this time hitting -.031 in the stanza. Maggie Hembree performed well offensively in the set, adding four kills on a lofty .667 attack percentage.
The Pirates found their rhythm in a back-and-forth set three, as ECU took the frame, 25-23. Senior Rachel Moore paved the way for the Tulsa offense in the frame, tallying five kills.
In the fourth and final set, Moore and junior DS/L Taylor Horsfall bolstered the Hurricane defense, posting eight and nine digs, respectively, to clinch the set and match, 25-19.
Along with Thorson's milestone match, Moore recorded a double-double, posting 10 kills and 13 digs in the victory. Junior Mariah Pardo tallied a career-high seven kills, while Horsfall paced the team with 17 digs in the contest.
As a whole, Tulsa hit a respectable .218 in Sunday's match, putting down 49 kills to ECU's 39. The team accumulated 62 digs, to go along with a remarkable 61 percent sideout percentage.
Head coach Ryan Wills' squad gets a few day to rest, as it's scheduled to head to Texas for two key conference matches against Houston on Oct. 19 and SMU on Oct. 21.
