Tulsa Duos Advance to Doubles Quarterfinals at ITA Regionals

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Tulsa women's tennis duos of Martha Matoula/Arianna Capogrosso and Martina Okalova/Vera Ploner advanced to the doubles quarterfinals on Sunday at the ITA Central Regional in Iowa City, Iowa.
The first Tulsa tandem advanced after an 8-6 victory over the Arkansas doubles team of Tatum Rice/Lauren Alter. With the win, TU will face off with Mackenzy Middlebrooks/Ellie Wright of the University of Missouri on Monday with time TBA.
Okalova/Ploner sealed their spot in the quarterfinals with a win against Oklahoma's Martina Capurro Taborida and Camila Romero in an 8-5 battle. The duo will face off with a tandem from Nebraska on Monday morning with time TBA.
In singles, four Tulsa athletes took the court, as Shura Poppe advanced to the round of 16 with a victory over Claire Refeis of Nebraska, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Despite her momentum, Poppe fell in the round of 16 to Nina Khmelnitckaia (Kansas), 6-1, 6-4. Khmelnitckaia came into the match ranked No. 106 in the Oracle ITA preseason singles rankings.
In other Sunday action, freshman Megan Hopton continued her hot start to the fall, taking down Swetha Prabakar of Arkansas handily, 6-1, 6-0. Vera Ploner also made her presence felt in an extra match on the day, taking down Vivien Abraham of Missouri convincingly, 6-3, 6-1.
Doubles quarterfinals and semifinals, as well as singles quarterfinals , are set to kick off tomorrow morning with times TBA.
