
Tulsa Volleyball Falls to Wichita State in Regular Season Finale

WICHITA, Kan. – University of Tulsa volleyball (19-11, 11-7) dropped its final match of the 2018 regular season to Wichita State (13-16, 8-10), 3-2, in a five-set thriller on Friday night in Charles Koch Arena.
Despite the defeat, senior Emily Thorson accumulated 22 kills in the match, earning her sole possession of No. 5 in TU history with 1,138 career kills. She surpassed Hannah Stout, who finished her time in Tulsa with 1,116 kills.
The Tulsa defense held strong in the first set, as the Golden Hurricane secured the frame, 25-18. TU held the Shockers' attack to a .171 hitting percentage, adding three blocks in set one.
The Shockers rebounded to steal the second set, 25-15. Thorson remained solid at the net, finding the floor for five kills on a .417 clip to pace the Hurricane in the stanza.
The third set played out similarly to the second, as Wichita State nabbed the stanza, 25-15. Junior DS/L Taylor Horsfall notched seven digs on the back line to pace Tulsa, while Thorson added another four kills in the set.
Tulsa rebounded in the fourth frame, taking the set 25-12 on the back of a 10-0 run in the middle of the set. The team hit with extreme efficiency in the stanza, hitting to the tune of a .355 hitting percentage. Freshman Elyse Savadove found the floor for three kills on four swings in the set.
In the fifth and final set, the Hurricane managed a 4-0 run in the middle of the frame. Despite Tulsa's efforts, Wichita State edged out TU, 16-14, to clinch the match on a challenged attack from sophomore Callie Cook.
In Tulsa's fifth five-set match of the season, the squad tallied 55 kills, 79 team digs, seven blocks and five service aces. Junior setter Mariah Pardo racked up her team-high 13th double-double this season, accumulating 46 assists and 13 digs in the defeat.
Head coach Ryan Wills and the team rounds out the regular-season with 19-11, 11-7 record. The mark secures Wills second-best regular season record in his five-year tenure, only behind the 2014 season.
With Wills' bunch's 2018 regular season complete, the team awaits to see if it will earn its first postseason bid since the C-USA Championship in 2013. The NCAA selection show will take place on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
If not selected, the team will await to see if it has the opportunity to compete in the women's National Invitational Volleyball Championship, with selections to be announced following the NCAA selection show.
