Singles Shine in Second Day of Red and Blue Challenge

DALLAS, Texas – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad continued its strong start at the Red and Blue Challenge, hosted by SMU, picking up five singles wins and four doubles victories on day two in Texas.
Doubles kicked off the day at 11 a.m. CT, as ITA Central Region doubles champions Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner took down SMU's Vivienne Kulicke/Ana Perez-Lopez in a back-and-forth match, 7-5.
Shura Poppe and newcomer Manon Meulenberg followed accordingly, defeating Emma Pieroni and Tiffany Hollebeck in identical fashion, 7-5.
In Tulsa's doubles matches against Wichita State, Okalova/Ploner once again showed why they're one of the nation's best duos, taking down Fatima Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco, 6-3. Shortly thereafter, Meulenberg and freshman Megan Hopton took down the Shockers tandem of Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva and Alexandra Lazarova, 7-5.
Singles against SMU would follow, as senior Martha Matoula picked up the first singles victory for the Golden Hurricane on the afternoon, edging out Perez-Lopez, 7-6, 6-4. Shortly after, freshman Arianna Capogrosso took down Sarai Monarrez Yesaki in a tight match, 7-5, 6-4.
Meulenberg continued her momentum into singles, taking a tight match over SMU's Tiffany Hollebeck, 7-6, 6-4. Freshman Marina Davtyan secured her match handily over Katherine Jakeway, 7-5, 6-1. In the final TU singles victory of the evening, Hopton handled Pieroni of SMU with ease, 6-1, 6-0.
Day three at SMU is set to resume on Sunday, November 4, with times TBA.
