TULSA, Okla. — DaQuan Jeffries recorded his third career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Tulsa to a 70-60 win over visiting New Orleans on Thursday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
It was the third 20-point outing of the season for Jeffries, the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. The senior went 7-of-12 from the floor and tied a career best with four 3-pointers to help the Golden Hurricane (8-3) extend its home winning streak to 14 games.
Martins Igbanu also picked up a double-double, his second of the season and fourth of his career, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Zeke Moore came off the bench to go 3-for-3 from behind the arc on his way to a season-best 11 points.
Tulsa shot 52.2-percent from the floor and outrebounded the Privateers (4-4), 45-36.
"I thought everything in the game was really good other than missing free throws, which we can fix," head coach Frank Haith said. "We're a good free throw shooting team. We came out with the right focus we needed to have after last week, especially playing a team that is athletic and aggressive. I thought we did a great job with our mindset in how we attacked and played offense and defense. For the most part, our defense was great the whole game. Going into a game like this you want to be aggressive and attacking. We did. We got to the free throw line. When you don't make free throws, it kind of puts a lull in the game. It's like a turnover, but for the most part our guys did what we needed to do to win the game. I'm proud of them."
Meanwhile, New Orleans was paced by 19 points off the bench from Troy Green. The Privateers were limited to 34.8-percent shooting, including just 26.5-percent in the first half.
Tulsa started fast and outscored the visitors 23-6 over the first 12 minutes. During that time, New Orleans was just 3-of-17 from the floor.
That stretch included a 3-pointer from Moore, and he would hit another triple later in the half on his way to eight points during the opening period.
"It was a relief for me, finally," said Moore, who knocked down his first outside shots of the season. "Coach Haith and the coaches have been working me out and making sure I stay sharp and confident in myself. It was one of those nights where it was finally falling through so, hopefully, I can keep up that energy. I thank my teammates for finding me, having faith in me and keeping me going."
In all, the Hurricane shot 60-percent (15-of-25) in the first half on its way to a comfortable 41-21 advantage at the break.
Tulsa stretched the advantage out to as much as 28, 56-28, with 14:10 left in the contest. Jeffries, Moore and Sterling Taplin all connected from behind the arc in the first six minutes of the second half.
However, Tulsa's struggles at the free-throw line enabled the Privateers to slowly creep back into the game, although the TU advantage never dipped below double-digits and the squad took home the 70-60 final.
TU will return to the court for a neutral-site game against Dayton (5-4) at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16. That contest will be the second game of a triple-header as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase presented by Citi at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
