Golden Hurricane Storms Past No. 16 Baylor

WACO, Texas – The Golden Hurricane (8-2) upset No. 16 Baylor (2-3) on Saturday, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The Hurricane collected the doubles point, before it claimed three singles match victories, on its way to a 4-2 match win over the Lady Bears.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Vera Ploner and Martina Okalova faced Theresa Van Zyl and Jessica Hinojosa. Ploner and Okalova came out on top, 6-3, to earn Tulsa's first doubles match win.

At the No. 1 position, Ksenia Laskutova and Martha Matoula went up against Angie Shakhraichuk and Dominika Sujova. Laskutova and Matoula pulled away with a 6-3 victory, clinching the doubles point for TU. The Golden Hurricane held a 1-0 lead as the match went to singles play.

At the No. 1 singles position, Laskutova won the first stanza, 6-1, against Sujova. In the second, Laskutova matched the first set with a 6-1 victory and put Tulsa on top of Baylor 2-0.

The Lady Bears pulled within one, as No. 101 ranked Livia Kraus defeated Alexandrina Chinikova, 6-2 and 6-0, in the No. 6 singles match.

Shakhraichuk won the first set of the No. 3 singles match against Tamara Kupkova, 6-1. Kupkova was resilient as she won the second frame, 6-2, and forced a third set. In the third set, Kupkova used her momentum from the second as she claimed a 6-2 victory in the third. Kupkova extended TU's lead back to two, 3-1.

Ploner won the opening set of the No. 5 singles match against Hinojosa, 6-4. However, Hinojosa would win the next two sets, 7-5 and 7-5, to with their matchup. Tulsa led 3-2 after the completion of this match.

Camilla Abbate took the first set at the No. 4 position, 6-1, against Matoula. Matoula was unfazed and rallied back to win the second set, 6-2. The two battled to a tiebreaker in the third and final set. In the tiebreaker, Matoula pulled away to a 7-4 decision, as she took the final set, 7-6. Matoula's victory sealed the Hurricane's upset of No. 16 Baylor, 4-2.

With the victory, Tulsa improves to 8-2 on the year. The Golden Hurricane returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, as it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., for a contest against DePaul. First serves are scheduled for 12 p.m.
