WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Martha Matoula clinched the Golden Hurricane victory, as she won her singles match, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), and 7-5. Tulsa (10-2) defeated Purdue (5-3) in a thrilling 4-3 decision that came down to the final set at Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Sunday.

With the overall match tied at 3-3, Matoula and Rafaella Baquerizo needed a third and final set to decide the winner of the No. 4 singles match, as well as the overall match as well. After Matoula won the first set 7-5, Baquerizo took the second 7-6 (7-5). The third set was much like the first two, tightly contested. Matoula was victorious in the third set, 7-5, which clinched the match for the Hurricane. Matoula improved to 5-1 on the season in dual match singles play.

In the No. 3 doubles match, Tamara Kupkova and Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg bested Caitlin Calkins and Alex Sabe, 6-4. Matoula and Ksenia Laskutova pulled out a 6-4 decision against Silvia Ambrosio and Ena Babic at the No. 1 doubles position. Tulsa earned the all-important doubles point and led 1-0 as the match headed to singles play.

Baquerizo and Seira Shimizu knocked off Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner in the No. 2 doubles match, 6-4.

At the No. 2 singles position, No. 111 ranked Okalova took the first set against Sabe, 6-2, but Sabe would win the second set by the score of 6-1. Okalova was resilient as she stormed back to win the third set, 6-4. Okalova is now 7-1 in dual match singles competition.

Alexandrina Chinikova won the opening stanza of the No. 6 singles match against Zala Dovnik, 6-3. Chinikova went on to win the second set by the same score. Chinikova improved to 3-3 in dual matches.

The No. 79 ranked Ambrosio defeated Laskutova, 1-6, 6-4, and 6-3, at the No. 1 position. Babic took the No. 3 singles match, 6-1 and 6-4, against Kupkova. Shimizu bested Ploner at the No. 5 spot, 1-6, 6-4, and 6-1.

The Golden Hurricane extends its winning streak to five matches and is now 10-2 on the year. Tulsa returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 25, as the USF Bulls come to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
