Hurricane Sweeps the Islanders, 5-0

TULSA, Okla. – Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe both completed their respective singles match without surrendering a game. Tulsa (13-3) swept Texas A&M Corpus Christi (6-5), 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Matoula and Ksenia Laskutova pulled away to a 6-3 victory against Luna Dormet and Carolina Bulatovic in the No. 1 doubles match. Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner secured the doubles point for TU as they defeated Louis Trigona and Mariana Vicens, 7-5, at the No. 2 position.

Maria Soler and Maria Maldonado bested the Tulsa duo of Tamara Kupkova and Shura Poppe, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot. However, the Hurricane held a 1-0 lead as the match went to singles competition.

Matoula stormed to a two-set victory, 6-0 and 6-0, against Trigona at the No. 3 position. This marks the second time this season that she has held an opponent winless in dual match singles play. Matoula improved to 8-2 in dual singles competition and extended the TU lead to 2-0.

Poppe held her opponent scoreless for the third time this season, as she defeated Maria Soler, 6-0 and 6-0, in the No. 6 singles match. She grew the Hurricane lead to 3-0 and improved to 4-0 in dual singles matches.

Laskutova, ranked No. 71, opened the first set of the No. 1 singles match against Dormet with a 6-2 victory. Laskutova went on to break Dormet three times and claimed the second stanza 6-0. She improved to 12-3 in dual singles matches and put Tulsa on top 4-0.

The No. 97 ranked Okalova distanced herself in the opening set of the No. 2 singles match against Bulatovic, with a 6-1 victory. Okalova matched the score from the first in the second and claimed the match. Okalova improved to 10-2 on the year in dual matches and secured a 5-0 victory for the Hurricane.

With the win, the Golden Hurricane is now 13-3 on the season. Tulsa returns to action on Saturday, March 17, as the No. 23 Wichita State Shockers come to the Case Tennis Center. This will be the first installment of the Havoc in the Heartland and is scheduled for 2 p.m.
