Tulsa Volleyball Splits on First Day of Bruiser Showcase

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team kicked off the Bruiser Showcase with a 1-1 record on Friday against East Tennessee State and host Belmont. The Golden Hurricane fell to ETSU (25-17, 25-21, 25-13), but rebounded with a sweep over Belmont (25-20, 25-14, 25-17).

The Golden Hurricane (2-2) dropped the first match of the Bruiser Showcase to ETSU (3-1) on Friday morning.
 
Senior Emily Thorson had a hot start to the match, beginning with a kill and two blocks to put Tulsa up early, 5-2. ETSU took a narrow lead through the battled first set, 13-11, despite Emily Hubbard, Mariah Pardo and Taylor Horsfall all with two digs each. The Bucs would pull away to take the first set, 25-17.
 
ETSU would separate early in the second set, going up 6-3 despite Hubbard's two kills and four digs so far in the match. Tulsa would find itself down just one midway through set two, 15-14, thanks to Horsfall's seven digs. She would go on to finish the match with 13, but the Bucs took the back-and-forth set, 25-21.
 
A tightly-contested start to the final set, the Golden Hurricane would start out on top 8-5 thanks to three-straight ETSU attack errors. The Bucs would rally to take the set and the match, 25-13.
 
Thorson would finish the match with 10 kills, six digs, two blocks and the team's lone service ace. Callie Cook and Rachel Moore wouldn't be far behind, wrapping up the first match with six kills each, with Cook hitting a team-leading .250. Tulsa would end with 41 digs and 32 kills.
 
Tulsa 3, Belmont 0
 
In the second match on Friday, Tulsa (3-2) squared off with the Belmont Bruins (0-7), taking down the host in straight sets.
 
In the first set, a competitive first half resulted in a 16-15 lead for the Bruins. After a kill from sophomore Maggie Hembree, Tulsa caught fire and closed out the first set on a 7-0 run, taking it 25-20.
The Golden Hurricane clinched the second set in a more convincing fashion, 25-14. Moore hit .667 in the set, adding four kills on six attempts and four digs. Freshman Hannah Overmyer also notched three kills on seven tries in the frame.
 
Moore picked up where she left off in set two, notching two kills in the first three TU points of the final set. She also added two service aces in the set, clinching the match for Tulsa 25-17. Moore would finish the day pacing the team with a .438 hitting percentage.
 
As a team, Tulsa hit with authority, hitting .263 throughout the match. Thorson and Moore would finish with nine kills each. Horsfall led the team with 14 digs in the match, while Pardo added 21 assists to pace the Hurricane.
 
TU wraps up the Bruiser Showcase tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT as the Golden Hurricane square off with the UMBC Retrievers in Nashville, Tennessee.
