TULSA, Okla. –– First-year head coach Annie Young's Tulsa women's golf team opens the 2018 fall season today at the Utah Valley University Hobble Creek Fall Classic.
This is the first time that the Hurricane has competed at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic. The 54-hole tournament, covering two days with 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes being played Tuesday, takes place at the 6,135-yard, par-71 Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville, Utah. Tee times begin at 7:40 a.m. on Monday and 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
"We're really excited to get the season started. The girls have been working hard and we're ready to see if that hard work pays off in a tournament,' said Young.
The Tulsa team for the season opener will include freshmen ShaeLee Scarberry, from Purcell, Okla., and Lorena Tseng, from Tainan, China, who will open up the tournament in the No. 1 and 2 positions for the Hurricane. Local product and sophomore Taylor Dobson, from Broken Arrow High School, and seniors Olivia Jackson and Johanna Samuelsson round out the roster. Fellow senior Nikki Marquardt will play as an individual.
"The young ones came ready to go. They won the qualifier, but with that being said, I think the ones with experience will really show up in the tournament. I think we have the best team, the players who are playing the best, going to the tournament," said Young.
Samuelsson led Tulsa last year with a team-best 74.7 stroke average in 28 rounds, while Jackson was second with an average of 75.8. Dobson is making her first tournament appearance since last October as she missed the entire spring campaign with an injury.
Scarberry and Tseng bring solid credentials to the collegiate ranks. Scarberry led Purcell High School to three Class 3A state championships, while winning three individual titles herself. She topped off her senior season last May with a third team and individual crown. Tseng was the 18th-ranked international golfer among the class of 2018.
Young talked about that opening round on Monday morning.
"On that first morning, we'll tell them to just go play golf. They're going to be prepared. They've worked hard. That's the key, to go out there and trust what they've worked on," added Young.
"They're prepared to play, now it's about executing. They're going to have nerves. If you don't have nerves, it's a problem. We'll need to learn how we react to the nerves. They'll probably make some mistakes that they don't normally make, but they'll be ready to go," Young concluded.
The Hobble Fall Creek Classic 12-team field also includes host Utah Valley, Boise State, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Incarnate Word, North Dakota, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Sam Houston State, Southern Utah and Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
There is no LIVE scoring for the event.
