Tulsa Edges Out Abilene Christian in Home Opener, 3-2

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball squad (5-2) defeated the Abilene Christian Wildcats (2-7) on Friday in its first match of the 2018 Tulsa Volleyball Invitational in the Donald W. Reynolds Center, 3-2.
In the first meeting between the teams in program history, the Golden Hurricane went to a fifth set for the first time in 2018, clinching the match in the waning moments.
In the first set, Emily Thorson led the way with six kills. Mariah Pardo did most of the setting for the Golden Hurricane, tallying 13 assists in set one. Abilene Christian would narrowly take the first set, 26-24.
In set two, fellow senior Rachel Moore took over, boasting seven kills on fourteen tries. Junior Taylor Horsfall showed off her back row prowess, accumulating eight digs in the set. The Golden Hurricane took set two handily, 25-20.
Moore would go on to step up in the third frame, boasting six digs and six kills on eight attempts in the set. Abilene Christian would take the frame, though, 25-21.
Tulsa would again rally in the fourth frame, handling it, 25-20. Thorson showed off her outside hitting power, tallying eight digs in set four. Pardo gave her plenty of chances, recording 11 assists to take the set.
In the final frame of the match, a back-and-forth battle resulted in a narrow victory for TU, taking the set, 15-13.
As a whole, Tulsa tallied 70 kills in the match, to go along with 87 digs. The Tulsa Volleyball Invitational continues tomorrow, as the Hurricane square off with Northwestern State at 11:30 a.m. and cross-town rival ORU at 7 p.m. CT.
