TULSA, Okla. – The No. 22 University of Tulsa women's tennis team (3-1) dropped its Saturday match to No. 9 ranked Oklahoma State (1-1), 6-1, inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Oklahoma State started strong in doubles, taking all three matches to earn the 1-0 lead. The tandems of Martha Matoula/Shura Poppe and Manon Meulenberg/Marina Davtyan both fell to Cowgirl duos, 6-2.
In the No. 1 spot, Tulsa's fourth-ranked duo Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner dropped its match to No. 28 Sofia Blanco and Catherine Gulihur, 6-4.
Heading into singles play, No. 73 Blanco edged out newcomer Megan Hopton, 6-2, 6-3, to push Oklahoma State ahead by two. The Cowgirls' Guinart would follow suit, taking down Ploner, 7-5, 6-2.
Okalova got Tulsa on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot over Bunyawi Thamchaiwat to cut the deficit to 3-1. OSU's Lisa Marie Rioux clinched the match for the Cowgirls, defeating Tulsa's Matoula in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Poppe fell to No. 21 Katarina Stresnakova, 6-4, 7-5, while Arianna Capogrosso dropped her match to OSU's Tamara Arnold, 6-2, 7-6(3).
Tulsa will return to action tomorrow with another Sunday doubleheader, squaring off with Arkansas Pine-Bluff at 9 a.m. CT and ORU for the second time this season at 1 p.m. CT.
