Golden Hurricane Bests ORU, Arkansas Pine-Bluff in Sunday Doubleheader

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 22 ranked University of Tulsa women's tennis team (5-1) managed two victories over Arkansas Pine-Bluff (0-2) and crosstown rivals Oral Roberts (1-4) inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday.
Tulsa 4, ORU 0
In the afternoon, the Golden Hurricane tallied a 4-0 sweep over Oral Roberts to take its second win of the day.
Tulsa got started early with the doubles point, as No. 4 ranked duo of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner showed why they are one of the nation's best, clinching their match over ORU's Gorana Kadijevic and Ceijenia Cornelius, 6-1.
In similar fashion, Martha Matoula/Shura Poppe handled Jovana Antonijevic and Flavia Gutierrez, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point. In the No. 3 match, newcomers Manon Meulenberg and Marina Davtyan earned a clean sheet, winning 6-0.
Heading into singles, the Golden Hurricane squad took the first set of all six singles matches. Matoula was the first to finish, taking her match over ORU's No. 1 Kadijevic, 6-1, 6-0. Not long after, Meulenberg managed a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot to push Tulsa's lead to 3-0.
In the four spot, Arianna Capogrosso clinched the match for Tulsa, taking down the Golden Eagles' Flavia Gutierrez Balcazar 6-2, 6-0 to shut out ORU 4-0. In addition, both Megan Hopton and Davtyan had match points before the match was clinched.

To kick off the morning, TU squared off with the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Lady Lions in both teams' first match of the day.
The Golden Hurricane handled the doubles point with ease, taking both doubles matches, 6-0. To follow, Tulsa took all six of the singles points without dropping a set to defeat the Lady Lions, 7-0.
Orford's squad will return to the court next weekend, scheduled to tackle the ITA Kick-Off Tournament in Evanston, Illinois, next weekend on Jan. 26-27.
