Golden Hurricane Falls to No. 17 Miami in First Round of ITA Kick-Off Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad (5-2) dropped its opening round match of the ITA Kick-Off tournament, 4-1, to the No. 17 Miami Hurricanes (4-0) on Saturday.
With the loss, Tulsa will play in the consolation match against No. 22 UCF (2-2) on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT in Illinois.
In doubles action, the Golden Hurricane struck first in the No. 1 spot, as Martina Okalova/Vera Ploner defeated Miami's No. 51 ranked Yuna Ito/Ulyana Shirokova, 6-2. With Saturday's win, the Tulsa duo is now 5-1 in the top spot for the Golden Hurricane.
Miami would even it up in doubles with a 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. As it came down to freshmen Megan Hopton and Marina Davtyan in the third slot, the newcomers came back from a 3-4 deficit to clinch the doubles point for TU, 6-4.
Miami made its mark in singles, taking four of the first six first sets in the match. To tie the match up, the Hurricanes' Daevenia Achong defeated Shura Poppe, 6-1, 6-2. Soon after, freshman Arianna Capogrosso fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to move Miami ahead 2-1 overall.
Miami's top player, No. 7 Estela Perez-Somarriba, defeated Martina Okalova in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5 to push ahead 3-1. In the No. 5 spot, Shirokova defeated freshman Megan Hopton, 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the match.
