CINCINNATI — Jarron Cumberland led all scorers with 23 points as Cincinnati defeated visiting Tulsa on Thursday night, 88-64, at Fifth Third Arena.
Sterling Taplin led five players in double-figures with a dozen points for the Golden Hurricane (12-8, 2-5). DaQuan Jeffries added 11 points, while Martins Igbanu, Curran Scott and Darien Jackson each finished with 10 points.
Taplin also logged a game-high seven assists and Tulsa shot 44.4-percent for the contest.
Meanwhile, Cumberland hit five 3-pointers on the way to his game-high total and Justin Jenifer tied a career best with 18 points on six treys for the Bearcats (17-3, 6-1). Cincinnati shot 55.9-percent in the second half and scored 25 points off 14 offensive rebounds.
The Bearcats started fast with a 10-2 run out of the gate before baskets inside from DaQuan Jeffries and Darien Jackson slowed the UC momentum. The home squad stretched the lead to double-digits with an 11-2 spurt, but Lawson Korita and Curran Scott put an end to that with back-to-back 3-pointers.
In the final minute of the half, Sterling Taplin knocked in Tulsa's fourth trey of the half, however, Cumberland hit a jumper in the paint to push the UC advantage to 39-28 at intermission.
Offensively, the Hurricane got the start that it needed to the second half as it hit six of its first eight shots. However, the Bearcats started just as hot by going 6-of-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 behind the arc.
A 13-3 Cincinnati run followed the hot start to put the game away. In all, the Bearcats went 10-of-16 from behind the arc in the second half to stop any potential Tulsa rally, and the home squad went on to record the 88-64 victory.
Tulsa will return home to face Houston (19-1, 6-1) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
