Valiree Morris scored two goals, but it wasn't enough as the Tulsa women's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision at Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-8 on the season and 2-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bearcats moved to 5-6-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.
"We started a little bit different lineup based on injury and tactics, but that didn't last long because of how the game started," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "They made it 3-0 before halftime. We just challenged the girls and changed things up at halftime, and we came out with a lot of heart, played hard, scored the two goals and created some other good chances. I am disappointed in the sense of urgency in the first half, but very proud of the way we played in the second half. We can't spot anyone in this league three goals. We challenged Cincinnati in the second half, believed we could get back in it and almost did."
"We wanted a better outcome from this weekend on the road, but we feel our destiny is still in our hands with three home games remaining. The bye week is coming at a good time with four injuries today, including two concussions, a broken arm and a rolled ankle, and we have some girls that are already out right now with injury. We are hoping to get these kids back and healthy, and prepare for the home stretch of the last three conference games."
Han Tang scored the first two goals for the Bearcats, including one in the 14th and 19th minutes, before Camryn Hartman gave UC a 3-0 lead in the 29th minute.
Morris got one back for TU in the 55th minute as she scored off a pass from Kayla Fernandez, but Libby Greenwell made it 4-1 with her goal in the 58th minute.
Morris earned her second goal off a free kick at the 59:11 mark for the final 4-2 score.
Cincinnati had a 25-12 lead in shots, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks.
Morris had a team-best four shots, while Fernandez and Anna Williams both added two attempts. Mica MacKay logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up three saves.
Tulsa will have a week off before closing out the regular season with home games against SMU (Oct. 24), Houston (Oct. 27) and Memphis (Oct. 31).
