Women's Tennis Goes Undefeated in Singles Competition on Day One of Tulsa Invite

TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa women's tennis team went undefeated in singles competition against Houston on day one of the Tulsa Invite. The three-day invitational being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center also features Central Arkansas and Wichita State.

The Golden Hurricane went 7-0 in singles matches on Friday afternoon. No. 73 Martina Okalova improved to 5-2 overall this fall with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Azul Pedemonti from Houston in the first flight. In the fifth flight, freshman Lian Benedejcic defeated Stephanie Belovukovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Marina Davtyan also won in straight sets 6-0, 6-3, vs. Ndindi Ndunda in the sixth flight.

In the third flight, Shura Poppe was able to hold off Houston's Sophie Gerits to win a first set tiebreak, 7-6 (4). The junior went onto win the second set, 6-3. Laia Conde Monfort and Vera Ploner were both pushed to three sets, but each came away with a victory. Conde Monfort improved to 7-3 this season, as the freshman picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 decision over Phonexay Chitdara in the fourth flight. In the second flight, Ploner defeated Mimi Kendall-Woseley, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Sophomore Megan Hopton improved to 6-2 on the year, as she secured a hard-fought win against Elena Tairyan from Houston in a second-set tiebreak 6-2, 7-6 (6) in the seventh flight.

The Golden Hurricane started the invitational against the Sugar Bears. Tulsa would capture a pair of wins in the first and third doubles flights, respectively. Fifth-ranked seniors Okalova and Ploner defeated Fuka Nonoyama and Chunxi Xin from Central Arkansas, 6-0., while Hopton and Conde Monfort secured a 6-2 win over Maja Gledic and Paulina Engback. Okalova and Ploner improved to 7-4 overall in doubles competition this year, while Conde Monfort and Hopton go to 2-3 overall.

The Golden Hurricane return to action on Saturday, as they face the Cougars and Shockers in doubles competition, followed by an afternoon matchup in singles play vs. Central Arkansas.

Fans can tune into all matches via live stream. All duels, except for contests played indoors, and on court #7 will be streamed. Additionally, no indoor duels will have live stats.
