Golden Hurricane Suffer Heartbreaking Five-Set Loss at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulsa volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit on Sunday at Tulane to force the decisive fifth set, but would suffer a heartbreaking loss [23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13] on the road.
With the loss, the Golden Hurricane (14-11, 7-5 The American) are once again tied with the Green Wave (17-8, 7-5) for third in the American Athletic Conference West Division standings. Tulsa entered the match holding sole possession of third place, as Tulane lost to Wichita State on Friday night.
The two teams combined for 31 ties and 27 lead changes. In the fifth set alone, there were nine ties and seven lead changes.
Trailing 13-12, Dilara Gedikoglu connected on her 19th kill of the match. Tulane would capture the final two points of the set to claim the match. Neither team led by more than two points in the set.
Tulsa took a 1-0 lead in the match, thanks to a 9-3 run to end the first set. Gedikoglu had three kills, while Hannah Overmyer and Mariah Pardo each recorded a service ace. Kayley Cassaday clinched the first of two games for the Golden Hurricane with a kill at 25-23.
In the third set, the Golden Hurricane erased a five-point deficit with a 9-2 run. Trailing 16-12, the Green Wave committed five straight errors. In total, Tulane had seven errors during Tulsa's scoring run. During the 11-point stretch, Callie Cook and Hannah Overmyer each tallied a kill for TU.
Tulsa would lead for the majority of the fourth set, but a 4-0 Tulane run put the Green Wave ahead at 17-16. The Golden Hurricane took back the lead, scoring five straight points to go-ahead, 21-17. Cook, Gedikoglu, and Overmyer each connected on a pass from Roosa Rautio.
Tulsa finished with a .164 hitting percentage, tallying 56 kills on 177 total attacks with 27 attacking errors. Tulane ended with a .206 attacking clip, finishing with 62 kills on 175 total attempts with 26 attacking errors.
Gedikoglu led the Golden Hurricane with a team-high 19 kills and had 18 digs for her 12th double-double of the season.
Cook moved into fifth place in total blocks in program history. She finished with 2.5 blocks (one solo, three block assists). The junior middle blocker also ranks third in career block assists at TU with 289.
Taylor Horsfall recorded 30+ digs for the 13th time in her career, finishing with 36. It's the fifth time this season that the senior defensive specialist/libero has chipped in over 30 digs. She also had a service ace.
Rautio registered a team-high 25 assists, while Pardo added 19. The two setters each had a pair of service aces.
Maggie Hembree added 2.5 blocks (one solo, three block assists), while Maddie Rhoder had 1.5 blocks (one solo, two block assists).
Hembree also recorded a .412 hitting percentage. She had eight kills on 17 attacks with one error.
Following their fourth fifth-set match of the year, the Golden Hurricane return to Donald W. Reynolds Center for their final home matches of the regular season. Tulsa is scheduled to play Memphis on Friday at 12 noon.
