Tulsa Basketball Opens with 80-72 Win Over Houston Baptist

TULSA, Okla. –– Jeriah Horne scored 22 points to lead Tulsa (1-0) to a season-opening 80-72 win over Houston Baptist (0-1) Tuesday afternoon in front of 5,607 fans on the 3rd Annual Blackboards & Backboards Game.
Over 3,300 elementary and junior high school youth representing 22 schools were in attendance for the Hurricane opener. The victory extended Tulsa's non-conference winning streak to 14 games over three seasons.
Martins Igbanu and Brandon Rachel added 16 and 12 points, respectively, while Rachel had a team-high 10 rebounds. Tulsa dominated points in the paint 48-to-20, scored 20 points off of HBU turnovers and converted on 21-of-27 free throws for 78 percent. The Huskies were led by Ian Dubose's 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Tulsa took its first lead of the game with 0:34 left in the first half when Horne hit a jumper in the paint for a 39-38 lead. Isaiah Hill added to the score with a layup at the 0:13 mark to give Tulsa a 41-38 halftime lead.
After scoring the opening basket of the game, HBU held on to the lead for the first 19 minutes, as their lead fluctuated between one and 8 points. The game was tied twice in the first half, 2-2 and 7-7, and the Huskies took its largest lead of 8 points, 30-22, at the 6:25 mark and again with 3:32 remaining at 36-28. Horne's free throw at 2:56 started a run that saw the Hurricane out-score the Huskies 13-2 to close out the first half.
Horne led Tulsa's scoring in the first half with 13 points, followed by Igbanu's 9 and Hill's 8 points. The Hurricane established its paint presence in the first half by outscoring HBU 24-8.
The 20 minutes saw Tulsa knock down 14-of-16 free throws, while converting one of only 4 three-pointers. HBU was 5-of-17 from behind the arc in the first half and 7-of-8 from the line.
HBU started the second-half by outscoring the Hurricane 10-3 in the first 4:05 to take a 48-43 lead. The Huskies made it a 6-point game, 53-47, at the 13:51 mark before the Hurricane scored the next 11 points. Tulsa took a 58-53 lead on 2 Igbanu free throws with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Hurricane continued with an 11-2 run for an overall 22-4 run from the 13:10 to the 5:28 mark when the lead was 69-57 following a Darien Jackson dunk.
Tulsa maintained its double-digit lead, topping out at 13 points three times until an HBU 3-pointer with 0:18 left on the game clock cut Tulsa' win total to 8 points.
The Hurricane improved to 4-0 over Houston Baptist in the series with the win today.
Tulsa plays at Texas-Arlington on Saturday with a 7 p.m. tipoff at College Park Center. Tulsa has a 4-0 series advantage against UTA. Tulsa will be back home next Tuesday for the Annual Mayor's Cup Game against cross-city rival Oral Roberts. The game till tip at 7 p.m.
