TULSA, Okla. -- The Tulsa volleyball team heads to South Dakota looking to avenge its regular season loss to the Coyotes in the semifinals round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Hurricane (18-15) and Coyotes (30-2) squared off in TU's fourth match of the season at the KC Roos Klassic in Kansas City, where the Hurricane fell in straight sets [18-25, 21-25, 22-25]. Overall, this will be the fourth all-time matchup between the two teams. South Dakota leads the series, 2-1, and has won two straight.
Both teams have faced their share of competition in the NIVC, en route to their bid in the semifinals. Tulsa played its first two matches of the NIVC at Long Beach State, where the Hurricane defeated UC Davis [20-25, 25-13, 26-24, 25-20] and Santa Clara [25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22] in four sets, respectively. They then returned to Donald W. Reynolds Center for the first time in a month on Thursday, where they held off Weber State in five sets [25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 15-10].
South Dakota has played all three of its NIVC matches at Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The Coyotes defeated Central Michigan in four sets in the first round [20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19], followed by a sweep of UNLV in the second round [25-22, 25-19, 25-18]. UT Arlington gave South Dakota a scare in Tuesday's semifinal contest, but the Coyotes survived in five sets [25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11].
The winner of the semifinal contest will advance to the championship match, held either December 16, 17, or 18, with their opponent being either Georgia Tech or TCU. If Tulsa were to win on Saturday night, it would be the second straight year a team from the American Athletic Conference played in the final contest of the NIVC. Last season, Tulane dropped a straight-sets decision in the final round to Iowa State.
