LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad (7-5) dropped its match to the No. 12 Kansas Jayhawks (5-1), 6-1, on Saturday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The doubles point played out to be a back-and-forth battle, as the Jayhawks managed to secure the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. The freshmen Tulsa duo of Megan Hopton and Marina Davtyan struck first, winning 6-2 in the No. 3 spot.
The Jayhawks responded with a 6-2 victory over their own at No. 2 to even up the doubles point. In what came down to an NCAA top-10 doubles matchup, Kansas' No. 3 duo of Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia edged out Tulsa's No. 10 tandem of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner, 7-6(3).
Senior Martha Matoula was the lone bright spot in singles for the Golden Hurricane, as the senior earned the team's only point of the match. The Greece native picked up a ranked win over Kansas' No. 50 Janet Koch, 7-6(3), 7-5.
With the victory, Matoula now paces the Golden Hurricane in singles, boasting a 7-2 overall record in solo play in the dual season.
Kansas took a 2-0 lead after Davtyan fell to Sonia Smagina, 6-4, 6-0. At the No. 5 spot, Hopton dropped her match after finding early success, 6-3, 6-2. Okalova battled against Kansas' No. 53 Anastasia Rychagova, but fell 6-0, 6-4, as the Jayhawks took the 4-0 lead.
Ploner and Shura Poppe would also fall in straight sets to the talented Jayhawk squad, while Matoula finished out the match with Tulsa's lone win.
