Tulsa Picks Up Second-Straight Sweep in Win Over Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad (9-5) tallied its second-consecutive shutout on Sunday, blanking the Montana State Bobcats (3-6), 7-0, at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Tulsa struck fast in the doubles matches, as the Golden Hurricane picked up wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots to clinch the match advantage. Martha Matoula and Manon Meulenberg nabbed a quick 6-0 sweep, followed by Marina Davtyan and Megan Hopton winning 6-1 to secure the point.
The No. 1 doubles match between Montana State's Laura Mary/Linnea Fristam and TU's Vera Ploner/Shura Poppe was tied at 3-all before the point was decided.
The Golden Hurricane went on to take all six singles matches in straight sets. Hopton earned the first win at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-1. Shortly after, Ploner improved to 8-3 in the dual season in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
No. 87 Matoula added a team-leading ninth singles win at the top solo position for Tulsa, winning 6-3, 6-2 over the Bobcats' Walker. To push the TU lead to 5-0, Poppe pushed her 2019 singles record to 6-5, adding a straight-set winner of her own.
In the final two matches of the afternoon, Meulenberg extended her flawless 4-0 singles record with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the sixth slot. Davtyan tallied TU's final victory of the afternoon to shut out the Bobcats, 6-1, 6-2, against MSU's Sara Iverson.
Tulsa gets the week to rest, as head coach Dean Orford's squad returns home for a Saturday, March 2, match against Purdue next weekend at 12 p.m. CT inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
