No. 8 UCLA Tops Tulsa on Sunday, 4-0

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad (6-4) dropped its Sunday match to No. 8 UCLA (4-0), 4-0, inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

UCLA managed the early lead in the match on the back of a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, followed by a 6-1 win at No. 3 over Tulsa's Megan Hopton and Marina Davtyan.

In the top spot, No. 4-ranked duo of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner was on top of No. 6-ranked UCLA tandem of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield, 4-3, before the deciding point.

Trailing heading into singles, Tulsa fought back, but fell in each of the first six sets. Ploner managed to bring the set back to 6-5, but dropped the frame 7-5 to No. 113 Abi Altick.

In the No. 5 spot, Hopton fell in her match, 6-2, 6-2 to give UCLA the two-point advantage overall. Soon after, the Bruins extended their lead, as they claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5 to tally a three-point margin.

UCLA managed to clinch the match on court one, as the Bruins' No. 11 ranked Elysia Bolton topped Okalova, 6-2, 6-3. With the loss, the Tulsa junior remains 4-3 at the top spot for the Golden Hurricane.

Despite UCLA clinching, Davtyan and Martha Matoula were trailing by just one game in the second set, 3-4, while Ploner was leading 3-0 in the second frame of her match.

Head coach Dean Orford's bunch will get the week to rest, as it will resume action on Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon CT inside the Case Tennis Center against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
